Background of the study
Community-led initiatives have become vital in promoting sanitation and hygiene in many Nigerian communities. In Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State, local groups have taken the lead in addressing sanitation challenges through public health campaigns, waste management programs, and community clean-up exercises (Olutayo, 2023). These grassroots efforts are often driven by a deep sense of communal responsibility and a commitment to environmental sustainability. By mobilizing community members, local leaders, and external stakeholders, these initiatives have improved waste disposal practices and reduced the prevalence of sanitation-related diseases (Akinyele, 2024). Moreover, community-led approaches are seen as more sustainable and contextually relevant compared to top-down government interventions. However, the success of these programs is sometimes hindered by inadequate funding, limited technical expertise, and infrastructural challenges. Recent studies have highlighted that when communities are empowered to manage their own sanitation, the overall health outcomes improve significantly (Adedipe, 2025). This study investigates the impact of these initiatives on sanitation and hygiene practices in Ijebu-Ode, focusing on their contribution to public health and community empowerment.

Statement of the problem
Despite numerous community-led initiatives in Ijebu-Ode, sanitation and hygiene challenges persist. Limited resources, lack of technical support, and sporadic government engagement often undermine the sustainability of these programs (Oluwaseun, 2024). While some communities have achieved notable improvements in waste management and public health, others continue to struggle with issues such as open defecation, inadequate waste disposal, and water contamination. These discrepancies highlight the need for a thorough evaluation of community-led initiatives, addressing both their successes and the obstacles they face. Without addressing these challenges, the potential for long-term health improvements remains limited, necessitating an in-depth study to provide actionable recommendations (Adewale, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the effectiveness of community-led sanitation initiatives.

  2. To identify challenges impacting the sustainability of these initiatives.

  3. To propose recommendations for enhancing sanitation and hygiene practices.

Research questions:

  1. How effective are community-led initiatives in improving sanitation?

  2. What challenges limit the sustainability of these initiatives?

  3. How can community-led sanitation programs be improved?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Community-led initiatives significantly improve sanitation and hygiene.

  2. Resource constraints negatively impact program sustainability.

  3. Strategic partnerships enhance community-led sanitation efforts.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of community-led initiatives on sanitation and hygiene, providing essential insights for public health policymakers and community leaders. The research findings will inform strategies to strengthen grassroots sanitation programs, ultimately contributing to improved public health outcomes and sustainable environmental practices. The study emphasizes the role of community empowerment in achieving long-term health and sanitation goals (Olu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating community-led initiatives and their impact on sanitation and hygiene in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, focusing solely on local programs and challenges.

Definitions of terms:

  • Community-led initiatives: Projects organized and managed by local community members.

  • Sanitation: The provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of waste.

  • Hygiene: Conditions and practices that promote health and prevent disease.
